Lembke runs an addiction clinic at Stanford, and her whole argument hangs on one idea: pleasure and pain sit on the same seesaw in the brain. Every tip towards pleasure gets corrected by an equal push the other way. Her patients aren’t only people on drugs, there are all kinds… all kinds. The fixes are unglamorous. Thirty days off whatever it is, putting physical distance between yourself and it, deliberately seeking out a bit of pain like cold water, and telling the truth about all of it, including the small lies. However it’s far more anecdotal than science based, even though a lot of studies are cited.
Although I found bits hard to read through, and the overall credibility a little questionable, the book was still helpful at a time when I needed a better understanding of my own habits.
